One of San Francisco's famous cable car rides is a popular activity. However, a closer look at the cable car takes the experience to a whole new level. This free museum is an interesting place for both children and adults to see how the time-honored cable car system works. The museum is located on Nob Hill and features three cable cars built in the 1870s. Among them is one last remaining cable car of the Clay Street Hill Railroad. But it's not just a museum of the cable car's past. The museum serves as a garage and part of the Washington-Mason power source, and contains the massive mechanism that powers the current system's cable cars. Enthusiasts will enjoy viewing the exhibits, including tools, grips, tracks, cables, brakes, and more, explaining the history of the cable car. Naturally, it's no surprise that cable cars were first introduced to hilly San Francisco. The inventor of the cable car came up with the idea of using a power system after seeing a wagon struggling up a steep hill. Also stop by the gift shop to purchase an authentic cable car bell. And if you visit in July, you can attend the annual Bell-Ringing Contest since 1949. It is currently held in Union Square. Another worthwhile stop is the SF Railway Museum (free). Across from the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero, it overlooks the influence of cable cars and traditional streetcars. You can also get behind the wheel of a life-size 1911 San Francisco streetcar and feel like a train conductor.

The Cable Car Museum was established in 1974. It is operated by the Friends of the Cable Car Museum as a nonprofit educational facility. Located in the historic Washington/Mason cable car barn and powerhouse, the museum deck overlooks the huge engines and winding wheels that pull the cables. Downstairs is a viewing area of the large sheaves and cable line entering the building through the channel under the street. On display are various mechanical devices such as grips, track, cable, brake mechanisms, tools, detailed models, and a large collection of historic photographs. The museum houses three antique cable cars from the 1870s. The Sutter Street Railway No. 46 grip car & No. 54 trailer and the only surviving car from the first cable car company, the Clay Street Hill Railroad No. 8 grip car. The museum store offers a variety of cable car memorabilia, books, clothing, cards and even genuine cable car bells!
